First up, get in touch with him and tell him your mistake, that you didn't realise. Don't say that you won't be paying (it might mean he leaves you negative feedback), just say you're working out how is best to pay him.

How much is the item? If it's not too expensive, have you thought about sending him cash directly? You can change pounds sterling cash to US dollars at the post office, free of charge, and you could always send the dollar bills (very well concealed) in the mail. I've done this before to someone in America and it was fine. Just do conceal it VERY well. Before putting my money in the envelope, I put my dollars in a folded up cardboard flier which I completely sealed and covered in heavy duty parcel tape, hah. Only cost a pound or so for postage, airmail, so it got there fast.

If you're not keen on that, just go to your post office and ask for their advice. Just explain that you need to send a certain amount of money to someone in America, and how do you do it. They'll probably be able to advise you on other methods :)

ooops! You're probably best sending cash.. a bankers draft is a cheque made out by your bank on your behalf - not much use for america.
